Run-of-River (ROR) hydro-electric systems harvest the energy from flowing water to generate clean electricity. The 60-MW COHECO powerplant harnesses power from the natural flow rate of the Amburayan river.
To generate clean electricity, a seven-meter high weir gathers water and lets it flow into a tunnel. The river continues to run its natural course even as the water in the tunnel powers turbines to generate clean energy—without emitting carbon.

ROR harnesses the natural potential energy and flow rate of water, generating electricity without burning coal or natural gas, which means fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
ROR uses the river’s natural flow, and does not need a reservoir. Because the Amburayan River is surrounded by steep mountain banks, the river’s rise during the rainy season is a naturally occurring event.
The 60-MW of power we generate uses only the river’s natural flow, and does not emit carbon. Our equipment and structures were chosen to have the least impact on the environment. Working with TAWID Foundation, we ensured that the existing flora and fauna were minimally impacted and that the eco-system in our area was largely undisturbed.
Compared to other sources of energy, investments in ROR systems can be recovered faster, due to lower costs and shorter development times.
